About Brett Mitchell....Brett Mitchell, praised for both his interpretive proficiency and technical clarity, has been listed on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's "Top Ten Classical Concerts of the Year" for the past three years. He is assistant conductor of the Orchestre National de France and a member of the American Conducting Fellows Program, a national conductor training program of the League of American Orchestras. Born in Seattle in 1979, Mitchell received his master's and doctoral degrees in orchestral conducting from The University of Texas at Austin and his Bachelor of Music in Composition from Western Washington University. He has additionally studied with David Robertson, Gerard Schwarz, Gunther Schuller, Marin Alsop, Jorma Panula and Larry Rachleff. Mitchell was the youngest of ten semifinalists from a pool of over 500 applicants in the Third International Conductors' Competition Sir Georg Solti in 2006, and was selected as a finalist for the Conductors Guild's 2007 Thelma A. Robinson Award. Brett Mitchell was appointed to the position of American Conducting Fellow of the Houston Symphony in September 2007. In that role, he leads the orchestra in several dozen classical, education, family, special, run-out and gala concerts each season in Jones Hall and throughout the greater Houston area. He will make his subscription debut with the orchestra during the 2008-09 season, sharing a program with music director Hans Graf. Mitchell has also been assistant conductor of the Orchestre National de France since February 2006, conducting the orchestra and assisting Kurt Masur at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and on tour. Additionally, he led the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall during rehearsals for Masur's 80th-birthday concert at the BBC Proms in July 2007. About Assia Dulgerska... Violinist Assia Dulgerska recently moved to Houston to join the Houston Symphony following her selection as assistant concertmaster during auditions in January. Assia has been receiving intensive instruction on the violin for more than 2 decades. Beginning in 1984, she spent 14 years at the Plovdiv School of Music in Bulgaria. She did her undergraduate work at Louisiana State University while studying with Kevork Mardirossian, and then went on to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music from 2003-2005. Her teacher during that time was Paul Kantor. Assia has been a prize winner in several competitions. She performed Tchaikovsky and Brahms violin concerti to twice win the Louisiana State University concerto competition. In 2000, she won first prize in the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist String Competition. Assia has been an active participant in several festivals. In 2006, she was selected to join the prestigious UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra, an ensemble of outstanding young talent from all over the world. She toured the world with that ensemble, performing with conductors Claus Peter Flor and Herbert Blomstedt and violinist Hilary Hahn. She participated in the Aspen Music Festival for 2 summers, serving as concertmaster of the "Sinfonia" ensemble there in 2004. She has also taken part in the Round Top Music Festival and the Music Academy of the West. |
